Historical Overview

Pan American region's historical overview In 1952 the Southwest Sports Car Club became chartered and incorporated in El Paso, Texas. The SSCC held meetings and events until 1957 when the decision was made to become a region of the SCCA and Pan American Region was born. In 1958 SCCA National road races were held in El Paso's Ascarate Park. National fame was obtained by several members with their road racing conquests while the locals held gymkhanas at nearby shopping center lots. Pan American region hosted the famous Rolling High National Rallies and was the host Region for the 1978 SCCA National Convention. In the early 70s there were 4 affiliated clubs within Pan American region; San Andres Touring Association, Otero Sports Car Club, White Sands Missile Range Club and the host club in El Paso that provided excellent participation and super autocross events. Even though there are no longer any affiliated clubs within our region, we enjoy a close relationship with the Rocky Moutain Division and SCCA's national office.

Pan American's Racing Highlights:

Early 1980s - World Class driver, factory GM C5R Corvette and now Cadillac CTS-V Driver Andy Pilgrim competes in Pan Am Solo events while working for El Paso Natural Gas as a computer programmer.

1986 & 87 - Randy Peck wins the first SCCA Solo 2 National Championship for Pan Am in A Stock

1992 - Charles Cave wins the SCCA National Championship in A Street Prepared

2002 - Pan Am hosts inaugural La Chupacabra Challenge Club Race at Arroyo Seco Motorplex

2005 - Pan Am hosts SCCA Solo 2 - National Tour at Cohen Stadium
