October/November 2011 Member Spotlight Jane McFarland 64 ST-L

Jane McFarland - 64 L ST

My husband and I have lived in El Paso for four years. I grew up in Michigan, and went to school at Indiana University. I've been a Park Ranger at Hueco Tanks State Park & Historic Site for a little over two years, and I love it. I've been driving my Volkswagen GTI at autocross events for three seasons now. I still have a lot to learn, but I always enjoy our autocross events!

1. How long have you been a member of SCCA?

I've been an SCCA member for three years.

2.  What was your first car?

My first car was a '91 Buick Regal coupe. It was pretty awesome for a first car. My dad got it for me when I was in college, and it moved me, my cat, and all my worldly possessions to El Paso. It's still in El Paso somewhere, and a part of me really misses it; wonder if I'll see it again.

3. What was/is your favorite car?

My Volkswagen GTI would have to be the favorite car I've owned. But, in reality, my favorite car might be a motorcycle.

What is your favorite racing memory?

I think it was two years ago. Another gal racer and I were very, very close with our PAX times, and we just kept inching ahead of one another during each run, and comparing notes when we got back to the grid. I don't even remember who had the best time that day, it was great to have someone so close in time to egg on, and to be encouraged by, during the runs.

Who is the racer you admire or respect the most?

Honestly, Guy Martin. He's in it purely for his love of racing, and he's gotten to where he is because of his dedication. His love of the sport is honest, enthusiastic, and infectious. My other answer was going to be The Stig, naturally.

How do you rank the following:  Driver, Car, Car Preparation?

For me, it's the driver first, definitely. I know I have lots of room for improvement as a driver (I mean LOTS), and that's what I try to focus on. Next, it would have to be car preparation. As I'm learning how my GTI acts, I definitely know there are changes I could make for better times. I think I ended up ranking the car last mostly because that's the variable I have the least amount of power to change!

What makes you successful?

I might gauge success for an autocross event differently than some folks - but for me if I've enjoyed myself and improved throughout the day, that's a success. So, when I can focus and understand what I need to do to improve, I'm successful.
